Hand dyed yarns and fibers
by Merike Saarniit & Kelly Eells of Meadows of Dan, Virginia
Liisu? In Estonian, Liisu is generally a "country girl" kind of name. Liisu was the name of my very first sheep. When we got more sheep, it became the name of our farm. Even though we no longer farm, "Liisu" has become so much a part of my life that when I needed a name for my yarns, there it was. Pronunciation? "Lee-Sue" (accent on first syllable).
Liisu Yarns offers hand dyed yarns and fibers and yarn kits featuring designs by Anna Zilboorg for knitters.
As featured in Handpaint Country (published by XRX Publications), Merike uses both natural and contemporary dyes allowing for a wide array of glorious color.
A little more specific info:
Liisu Yarns is a division of Horsepasture Mfg, LLC. My husband, Dane Melvin, manufactures the Grate Bale Box Feeders he invented for sheep, goats, alpacas and other fiber animals. Since we're both sort of fiber-related and we use the same facilities, computer, phone, and are often at the same fiber events (he with his feeders, me teaching workshops), it just plain made sense to keep both of our endeavors under one "Mom and Pop" umbrella business.
